By the numbers.

TEN weeks (or more) since I realized that the air conditioner in my car was broken and needed to be fixed, but I have yet to do anything about it. Which was fine 10 weeks ago when it was still winter-time in Provo, but now that it's pushing 100 degrees...action must be taken. asap.

NINE weeks have passed since Stephen asked me to marry him. It has been a crazy busy nine weeks! And although it still seems like our wedding is still foreverrrrrr away...looking back the last nine weeks have gone crazy fast!

EIGHT times a day I think about Hokulia shave ice and how much I want it. But then I also remember that due to the summer camps going on at the present...the line takes about eight hours*. (Which actually might still be worth it. I mean, that stuff is GOOD.)

SEVEN days until the 4th of July. I really hope this years' measures up to last years. I have full confidence that it will.

SIX homemade lemon chicken tacos have been devoured by yours truly during the last couple of days. (I don't think I could ever get sick of them. They're just too good. Homemade guac and pico on top are a given.)

FIVE (times ten plus one) days until I marry the love of my life. [ya.I'll be the first to admit that one's a bit of a stretch haha but just go with it.]

FOUR weeks since my last blog post. WOOPS. I'll do better this month ;)

THREE marvelous days were spent in Grace, Idaho this past weekend. (Well, technically two and a half, but I need something for three.) It is always nice to have a little weekend getaway, especially to Grace because it is BEAUTIFUL up there right now.

TWO hours drive to Manti, UT which is where Stephen and I will be going as soon as I'm off work tomorrow for the Manti pageant which I've never been to before. It should be good!

ONE day until my wedding ring is supposed to be here! Sadly, I don't think it will actually be here tomorrow, but there is still a small glimmer of hope deep down in my heart that it will arrive soon (as in within the next 24 hours soon, but with each passing hour that glimmer of hope is dimming.)

ZERO is the amount of times my PASS OF ALL PASSES has been used so far this summer. Unacceptable. I'm definitely hoping to bust that thing out within the next couple weeks.

*extreme exaggeration

Rain and Shine.

I'm currently living with my aunt and uncle. Last week my uncle's sister Jodee got married in the back yard. Jodee and Ken asked for me to take some pictures for them. I am by no means a professional quality photographer, but it was fun taking pictures for them and I definitely learned a lot! Here are a couple of my favorites.

Wedding photography is hard! After this experience I have so much more respect for people who are good at it. I'm definitely still learning the way around my camera, and trying to figure out the tricks behind capturing natural light. One of the things that made it especially hard was the weather! It was really the strangest thing because it was both sunny and raining - sometimes at the same time. How's that for a conundrum?!

Thanks Jodee and Ken for this opportunity!
Congratulations!

See You In Two.

I just got the first email from my little brother Daniel who is currently in the MTC!

This past Wednesday, exactly 11 years after my older brother Joseph entered the MTC, I dropped Daniel off at the very same place!

I am so proud of Daniel and his decision to serve a mission.
I can't wait to hear about his exciting adventures in Cleveland, Ohio :)

While dropping Daniel off I couldn't help but be reminded of a time when I said goodbye to another special missionary just over two years ago.... (Let's hope then next two years go faster than the last! ;))

Oh what a life I'm living,

PS If you want to receive Daniel's weekly emails, be sure to let me or my mom know!

California Dreamin.

Last Wednesday Stephen and I road-tripped to CA for a "Mission: Possible" themed family reunion. [My mom chose this theme since my brother Daniel will leaving on his mission to Cleveland, Ohio a week from today!] As cheesy as it may sound, Stephen and I were both really excited to be able to spend 10 hours in the car together [each way], and in the end it was JUST as much fun as we thought! :)

We had so much fun spending time with my family in CA! My nieces and nephews are just as chatty and adorable as ever and even though it was a little stressful when Stephen and I were left in charge of all seven of them while everyone else went to the temple for a couple hours...we survived!

It was a wonderful couple days filled with:
Early-Bird Nephews and Nieces,
Minute To Win it Games,
WARM 80-90 degree days, (definitely been dreaming about those since we got back to Provo and it's basically rained every day...)
Cleveland Trivia,
Water Games,
Family Pictures,
Mini Golf,
Olympic Events [such as wheelbarrow racing and marble toes],
Miriam's first date (which was SENIOR BALL - she went as a sophomore!)
and of course rounded off With a Flinders Family Original Music Video!

Sadly, I didn't take a ton of pictures because we were so busy, but here are a couple of my favs.

(Stephen took the one above, and I was REALLY impressed with how well he did, especially considering he had to focus it manually. We have a photographer in our midst, ladies and gentlemen!)
We really are a happy couple, can't you tell? ;)
(Photo Cred: Sarah! (She's the real photo expert in the family.) [Thanks for all the photography tips, Sarah!])

PS Check back soon for more details on our ENGAGEMENT that took place the weekend before :)

thoughts on missionaries.

I've pondered on writing this post for a while now - as it is a little more personal than usual - but I've decided that some of it might be beneficial to others who may stumble across this blog. Please know that this post was written with the best intentions and is meant to be direct, not offensive.

(How's that for an introduction?)

"Isn't your missionary coming home soon?"

The question posed above (and many along the same lines) has been a common one during the last few weeks and months (and days).

While it is true that "Elder Olson" one of my best friends (and yes, someone that I dated) will be returning from his mission to Uruguay later this week, I want to make one thing clear:

 He is not my missionary.

I don't have a missionary.

Girls (no matter how many letters they've written or care packages they've sent) don't have missionaries.

God has missionaries.

I understand that many people may use the term "my missionary"// "your missionary" simply for convenience sake, but many don't. Many girls pine and complain and have an, 'oh-woe-is-me' attitude about their missionary being taken away from them for two years. Personally, I think this is just plain silly and have very little sympathy for girls with this attitude.

Now that I think I've made my position clear on that account, I'll move onto the next question that usually follows shortly after the first:

"Are you guys going to get married?"

haha. Well isn't that an interesting question.

Picture this:  You have a best friend. Eventually you start dating this best friend. Right about the time you think you've fallen in love with this best friend, he gets called to serve the Lord and the people of Uruguay for two years. Two years. Two years in which you cannot see each other, two years in which you cannot speak to each other. Two years in which your only means of communication is good 'ole-fashioned letter writing.

You always knew this call would come, you always knew he would leave, but never could you prepare yourself for the reality of him leaving.  Never did you anticipate being one of those girls who "has a missionary." But, never do you question whether it's the right thing for him to do, because you always knew that it was. Unfortunately, however, that doesn't necessarily make your situation a whole lot easier.

  Now what? You ask yourself.

Could you picture yourself marrying this guy? Sure. But trying to plan your life two years in the future seems pretty ridiculous. "I'm not going to wait for you," you tell him. He knows this already. He never expected you to wait (to put your life on hold and sit around pining away the days until he comes back).  As a matter of fact, the two of you had had multiple conversations about how foolish it is for girls to "wait" - months before you even started dating.

"If I'm still around in two years - we can go from there." You tell him. "That sounds fine," He says. "But I am going to write you, at least until you get engaged. And when you do get engaged," he continues, "I don't want you to tell me who he is. I don't want you to tell me when you're getting married. I just want you to write me a letter that says:
 'Dear Elder Olson,
I'm getting married.
Have a great mission.
-Hannah.'"

The two of you laugh and you secretly dread even thinking about the day that you will have to write that letter. (Not that you were so sure you'd be married by the time he got back. But, everyone was basically expecting it of you. Both of your sisters were married by the time they were 20 (or there about) and what reason do you have to think you'll be any different? Besides, you tell yourself, people don't find their husbands when they're 18.)

And then he's off.

Now what? You ask yourself.

Just live.

You finally decide on a major.
You spend the summers working multiple jobs to save up for a study abroad.
You have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of living and studying in The Holy Land.
You meet many many wonderful people who change your life for the better.
You create a meme that becomes an internet sensation! (haha.)
You learn.
You grow.
You date.
And all the while you get letters weekly - from your best friend who is over 6,000 miles away.
(Even when he hasn't heard from you in weeks and weeks.)

Sure, you miss him.
But you're much too busy living your life to be sitting around on Friday nights thinking, "oh woe is me."

You meet a lot of really cool guys.
Some of them you want to date.
Some of them want to date you.
Occasionally you mutually want to date each other and you find yourself in a relationship.
And sometimes, while you're in those relationships you go weeks avoiding the mailbox, trying to find the balance between your current interest, and the best friend that was once such a huge part of your life.

And then the time for him to actually come home approaches.
...Right in the middle of when you're figuring out what you really want.

And yet, somehow, weeks and months before he is even home - even before you've heard is voice in two years - before you've given him so much as a hug, people expect you to be able to answer the question:

"Are you guys going to get married?"

And here is the honest answer folks:
 I don't know.

Could I see us getting married? Yup.
Could I see us dating and then deciding a different course of action? Yup.
Is he still one of my best friends? Yup.
Do I still have romantic feelings for him the way I once did? Nope.

Am I excited and nervous and interested to see what's going to happen? Yup.

I can't blame people for being curious. I'm sure I've fallen into this trap when someone I knew "had a missionary" coming home. But it wasn't until now that I understand what it's actually like.
So many emotions - or the lack of - make you feel like something is wrong with you. But, you just have to be able to take a step back and say, "It's okay to not have all the answers yet!"

Obviously every situation is different, so I can't speak for everyone,
but I know, I for one, will be more cautious in the way I handle these types of conversations (with others in a similar situation) the future.
And I think you should too.

Fortunately for me, I have a solid understanding of the Holy Ghost and the guidance that He can and will give me. And, I have full faith that if I continue doing what I know I should, Heavenly Father will reveal His plan for me to me when the time is right. I just have to be patient.

People always think they know what you should be doing, and often they will tell you what you should be doing. This is true of family, friends, and even people you hardly know. I've sat through many rants about the reasons why girls shouldn't ever ever write missionaries. I've sat through almost equally as many on why they should. The truth is: many people will probably not agree with the way Stephen and I handle things when he gets back. Some people will think we're moving too fast. Others will think too slowly. And still others will think that we shouldn't be dating at all.

I really like hearing the perspectives of others, and I've enjoyed talking to many people who have been in situations similar to mine, but the time has come to stop speculating about what could and should and might happen, and to keep doing what I've been doing for the last two years.

Just live.

A Christmas To Remember

This Christmas--the Christmas of 2012--has indeed been a Christmas to remember.

Back by popular demand, we added the 2nd installment to the Family Christmas Eve Music Video

(You're welcome ;))

This Christmas will be remembered because I saw a little boy at church making this letter for Santa:
(It says, "Dear Santa, Where do you think I'm at at the good o meter? -Jacob")

It will be remembered cause my dad got a Legally Blonde movie in his stocking.
(Because QUOTE: "He loves those movies!" -Mom)

It will be remembered because Mim accidentally made the cream cheese frosting
 (for the cinnamon rolls)
with granulated sugar instead of powdered sugar.
(In her defense, it still tasted good!)

It will be remembered because Dad's "gift of meaning" for Mom was the sensor light he's been "meaning" to replace. (hahaha.)

It will be remembered because it was the Christmas in which I got an iphone
(which was used to FaceTime with Grandma shortly after being activated :))

It will be remembered because much of the evening was spent preparing for our roadtrip to Utah the next morning.
(Which was also very memorable because we were cramped in dad's car
with wayyy too much stuff and barely any leg room :))
(Good thing we had lots of movies to watch on our basically-3-inch DVD player
to keep our minds off of how squished we were!)

(more pictures to be added later.)

This Christmas (season) will especially be remembered because the church
teamed up with The Piano Guys to produce this incredible video:

(Because that's really the most important thing to remember about Christmas.)

Wedding-ding-ding.

Since I am now a SENIOR year at BYU, I've had more than a few friends get married over the past couple years ;)

However, it wasn't until just recently that I had one of my BEST FRIENDS get married.

On Thursday August 23, my best friend/cousin/ex-roommate, Madi, became a MRS.

I thought that this would be a weird experience for me, since we've been so close over the years, but surprisingly it wasn't. It was just a fantastic, wonderful day and I was so happy be able to share this day with her.

Madi has always been such a great example to me. I have always looked up to her (figuratively..obviously ;)) and she is someone who I know will always instantly brighten my day. We plan to be BFFL (best friends for life) and already dream about the vacations that our future families will take together someday :) (...Mckay, I hope that doesn't come as a shock...)

The past few months have been especially challenging for her and I have just been amazed watching her make important decisions with prayer and fasting and pondering AND FAITH.

I am so happy that she and Mckay were able to be sealed for time and all eternity in the Draper LDS Temple.

                                  (then &&& now)

I LOVE YOU MAD, and I am very excited to be able to get to know you better, Mckay! :)

If a Picture's Worth 1,000 Words...How Much is a Video Worth?

Today was not a typical Christmas.

It was better.

More on that later maybe.

But for now,
just
enjoy.

We'll call it a present from me to you. ;)
(One that you can probably use to blackmail me with in years to come. ahahaha)

Perfect Evening

Saturday,
I was able to attend the wedding reception
of my good friend
(and roommate from last year)
Sara!

The previous friday night
(11-11-11)
I was honored to help plan and host her bachelorette party
(along with Brittany and Christine).
Christine had the great idea to make it a classy/mocktail party event
and though I'll admit I was slightly skeptical,
(and it was a lot of work to pull off)
I thought it turned out really well!

First, these are the invitations I made
(with the help of Andrea's boyfriend Jordan..thanks Jordan!!)

(i removed my address...i don't want stalkers ;) baha.)

Here are some pictures of the set up:

(thank you sooo much Andrea and Brittany for your help!!)
Brittany was testing out how the backdrop would look on the wall.

the almost completed "picture wall". If you know Sara, you know how much she loves her pictures ;)

Andrea definitely has the artistic eye. She was able to help make the place look AMAZING.
and the food and "margarita" tables....
(everyone knows you can't have a good party without good food! ;))

A few more various pictures of the evening...

the whole group!

(It's official. My neck is comparable to that of a giraffe's.)

me and the bride to be :)

don't worry. it's just soda! :)
One of the most memorable parts?
Well,
when the party was over,
Christine wanted to return some of the stuff
we didn't end up using for decorations.
The problem?
We couldn't find the receipt.
I thought it may have been accidentally thrown away.
The solution?
DUMPSTER DIG.

I thought of a plan.
I got our broom and lifted out one bag out at a time,
(using the broom handle and the loops on top of the bags)
then searched the contents of the bag
to see if it was indeed the trash from my apartment.
how do you like those "longer-than-the-average-female-gorilla"-arms in action? ;)

We couldn't find a flashlight (with working batteries) so we used the camera flash to be able to see inside the trashcan.

Just like fishin'!

SUCCESS!!!..well, sorta..

After a few attempts
we were able to locate the correct trash!
...but the receipt wasn't in there...
(Christine had it back at her apartment all along. hahaha)

Overall, the evening was perfect
and of course I made a wish at 11:11 a.m. AND 11:11 p.m.
(for those of you who claim that 11:11 p.m. doesn't count i beg to differ :))
